In the surrounding

Fortress city Brielle
Brielle is a historic fortress city with one of the best preserved fortifications of Netherlands. The city has more than 400 monuments and is described in many historical books, because on April 1th (1572) Alva lost his glasses. Glasses are called ‘bril’ in Dutch and that resembles the name of the city ‘Brielle’. Within the fortress walls are the Special Saint Catharijne Church and the interactive museum of the eighty years war, located in the old town hall. Each spot, each façade and each stone carries its own story. It is no wonder that enthusiastic Brielse guides regularly organise city tours. Did you know that Brielle is the second city after (Harlingen) that has the most monuments per inhabitant in the Netherlands?
